Chinchillas are a rodent species from South America. They have thick, luxurious coats. In captivity they can live between 10 and 20 years. In nature, their life expectancy drops to between 10 and 15 years.

In the early 1900s, chinchillas were on the brink of extinction. They were hunted and slain for their fur. It is 80 to 100 chinchillas to make one fur coat. Seeing the number of 11 chinchillas were captured and transferred to the United States. One died during the trip and it was born with a consistent 11 chinchillas. Chinchillas in the United States have pets today are all born from the original 11.
